Fabric Woven with Memory...

There are many things that can trigger memory. We associate certain smells, music, and foods with specific people and moments. For me, fashion has this same power. An item of clothing can quickly spark the memory of something or someone.

When I think of my Dad, I immediately think of his vast collection of turtlenecks, his ironed jeans, and his moccasin house slippers. It's these items of clothing that conjure up the clearest image of him in my mind. After twelves years since my Dad's passing, certain memories fade. That is the harsh reality: his characteristics blur and his voice becomes less distinct. But fashion always vividly brings him back to the forefront of my mind.

My Dad had a fascination with military planes and the Air Force. There was an airfield not far from my house and he would sometimes take us for exhibitions. This love inspired him to purchase a leather bomber flight jacket (You can see where I get my sometimes whimsical shopping habits from...). I recently rediscovered this jacket hanging in our hall closet. Although slightly oversized, I had fun trying it on and eventually styling into a complete look. Wearing the jacket not only brought back this memory of him but also made me feel closer to him: a feeling that is often hard to capture anymore.

I think it's important to keep those special pieces of clothing: your grandmother's sweater which will inevitably go back in style or your grandfather's oversized tee shirts that you can sleep in (the latter of which I have done). Those pieces never lose that special connection.

This coming Saturday would have been my Dad's 65th birthday. So this post is dedicated to him and all of the wonderful things he gave me....like my deep love of turtlenecks.
