Back to School and Back to Fashion

One of my favorite life events is picking out an outfit for the first day of school. Ok so it’s been a minute since I had a first day of school… fine, a decade; But to this day, the memory of going shopping for that first day look remains one of my dearest.

I could tell you the outfit I wore every first day of every year from Kindergarten to Senior Year. This isn’t because the clothes or pieces were special in their own right, albeit ALWAYS cute. They stay fresh in my memory because of what they meant to me.

There was some dread that always came with the first day of school. It signified the transition from carefree, sunny days to the reality of normality and schedules. However, the one thing that got me excited was when my Mom decided it was time to go back to school shopping (To be clear, I was very lucky that my Mom worked her butt off to allow me this privilege). I was always so happy to head to our local mall and start looking for the perfect outfit for the first day. And, of course, my Mom was the best shopping buddy.

Picking out the first day of school outfit essentially meant deciding what version of myself I wanted to present to the world (…the school). Every year brought another year of growth and self discovery and I wanted my clothes to properly reflect that. For me, the chosen outfit would help determine who I was for that school year. Needless to say, it was a big decision. However, more than anything, I ALWAYS wanted my outfit to be, well, fun.

This time of year still feels like a fresh start and the beginning of something new… another chance to grow or show a different version of myself. And first day of school or not, I still often find myself looking for the perfect outfit to reflect that feeling.
